The British Embassy in Chisinau is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a regional Communication and Media Manager.

Job Category: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Policy & Political roles)


The Communication and Media Manager will be responsible for:

  • Managing the communications and media work across Embassy teams (political, defence, humanitarian and strategic programme), ensuring public diplomacy is reflected in their frameworks, including via use of social media and media engagement.
  • Delivering the Embassy Communications Strategy, by amplifying the visibility and messaging of UK Government policies and promoting the UK.
  • Developing public diplomacy campaigns - leveraging public discourse for our policy objectives.
  • Leading on selection for the Chevening Scholarship programme, by which the UK funds scholarships for one-year Master’s degrees in the UK. 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Communications and Press

  • Write a daily Moldovan media summary for Moldova-watchers in the UK Government;
  • Lead on media strategy: develop media plans for Embassy activities and events, and identify innovative ways to enhance visibility;
  • Advise and support colleagues to use communications and media outlets to deliver their objectives;
  • Foster good working relationships with media contacts; provide advice on media handling, in response to enquiries or interview requests;
  • Draft and publish content (press releases, statements, photos, video, infographics) on Embassy digital media channels (Facebook and Twitter);
  • Monitor and report the media landscape.

Public Diplomacy and Political Affairs 

  • Design Embassy public diplomacy campaigns (for example, to counter disinformation from Russia), by seeking ways for UK to interject with evidence and arguments; design Embassy modalities for London-led campaigns;
  • Work closely with colleagues to promote programmes and projects;
  • Organise events to maximise Embassy’s public diplomacy e.g., regional visits, receptions with media contacts, events to promote UK priorities, King’s Birthday Party, etc;
  • Provide support and cover for the Political Officer; provide input to political briefings.

Chevening Officer

  • Promote Chevening Scholarship programme by increasing its visibility and attraction;
  • Lead on selection process and organise pre-departure/welcome home events;
  • Maintain links with the Chevening alumni community; support their applications for project funds. 

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Experience in a similar role (with focus on developing communications strategy and plans);
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to the CEFR framework);
  • Fluency in Romanian (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level according to the CEFR framework);
  • Fluency in Russian (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to the CEFR framework);
  • Graduate degree with a proven professional track record in communications, media or a similar relevant field;
  • Solid understanding of the Moldovan press community and civil society;
  • Ability to adapt to changing social media environment, identifying and using innovative media tools;
  • Ability to draft effective messages to different audiences, using the appropriate tools;
  • IT proficiency and ability to work across multiple platforms and experience with social media and editing platforms. Good knowledge of Microsoft office suite programmes;
  • Ability to respond quickly to fast-moving situations;
  • Excellent communications skills with a positive, inclusive, team attitude.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Experience in managing social media accounts, including content creation (Facebook, Twitter);
  • Experience with image and video editing software;
  • Track record of designing and implementing creative media solutions (traditional and/or new media);
  • Knowledge of British political system and the UK-Moldova relationship;
  • University degree - preferably in Media, International Relations or similar related subject.

Location: Chisinau, Republic of Moldova

Salary: 32,782 MDL (gross)

Other benefits and conditions of employment: This is a full-time permanent contract. The Embassy’s pay and benefits package is in compliance with local labour law. The gross monthly salary for this position is MDL 32,782. The annual leave entitlement is 24 working days per calendar year and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Moldovan/UK public holidays per year. The successful candidate will be subject to a reference check, security clearance and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three months.
