article130In the period of 23-30 November 2015, the Automobile Club of Moldova, in partnership with the REPEMOL project and the National Patrol Inspectorate, organized several meetings and trainings for teachers, pupils and their parents at the „Universul” Lyceum, in Chisinau. The main purpose of the intervention is to improve child safety and walk to school.
The events took place under the pilot intervention „Safe to school – safe to home” within the Road Safety Awareness Campaign (in partnership with the TRACECA Road Safety Project II) and funded by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

The key objective of the program is to significantly reduce the number of deaths and injuries among children travelling to and from school.
Improving children’ safety and their way to school is possible by the implementation of well-established measures, such as:

  • strengthening the road safety near the school
  • road safety education initiatives to foster a safer environment for children to walk to school, including teachers, pupils and their parents;
  • raising public awareness and local authorities attitude towards helping children to stay safe on the way to and from school.

1Thus, the meetings at the „Universul” Lyceum were organized as workshops with primary and secondary-school teachers (54 teachers), aiming to identify and implement the most effective methods for teaching safe walking skills to children.
There were a lot of road safety issues discussed, specific to the area where the school is located, and the possibilities for solving them. Every teacher received a set of working tools to be used for the road safety lessons, as well as other school activities.
As stated above, there were also invited children and parents, as participants in the workshops, in order to improve road safety through empowering local community and adults, responsible for children safety education.
It is important to note that the Student Council also participated in discussions concerned road safety education.
Thereby, students were asked to discuss the various risks and challenges during their journey to and from school, to answer the questions and to deal with certain situation relating to road safety. At the end of the workshop the most active students received various awards (reflectors, vests, pencils, copy books and other school stationery.)
Therefore, all the participants agreed to apply the taken methodology to education practice and everyday life. They established the road traffic injury prevention strategies and planned the safety promotion actions, which should be implemented in the near future.
