Book Club Meeting: Becoming by Michelle Obama

Becoming is an intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States. Besides being the first African American First Lady, she established herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world.

In her memoir, Michelle Obama chronicles the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood in Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work.

The Book Club meetings are organized once a month. Each month a different book is selected from the America House library based on the theme of the month. Participants are not required to read or know about the entire book before the session. During the meeting, they get to know more about the author and learn interesting facts about the book itself, and the context in which it was written. They read portions or chapters from the book and have a guided discussion on what they have read.

The purpose of “The Book Club” is to encourage America House visitors aged 14+ with an intermediate level of English to read more, discover new writers and topics, and borrow books from the America House library.
