2020 Internship Announcement
The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, Moldova is offering four internship opportunities to students from leading Universities of the Republic of Moldova. The following internship positions are available: Management Intern, Political/Economic Intern, Public Affairs Intern, and Office of Defense Cooperation Intern. A detailed description of each internship position is provided on page two.
Internship Dates: The 2020 student internship program will run from April 1 through May 31, 2020. The duration of each internship allows for flexibility and may range from four to eight weeks depending on the university schedule and the needs of the Embassy. The intern’s work schedule may vary and can be full-time or part-time.
Eligibility: To be eligible to participate in the Foreign National Student Intern Program (FNSIP), applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:
Minimum age: Students must be at least 18 years old at the time of participation in the program.
Citizenship/legal residence: The FNSIP is only open to students who are either citizens or permanent legal residents of the Republic of Moldova.
Meet definition of student: Applicants must have graduated from high school and be enrolled in a trade school, technical or vocational institute, college, university or other accredited educational institution.
Transcript and permission: Applicants must be in good academic standing at their current educational institution and must provide a certified transcript verifying this. Applicants must also provide written permission from the educational institution at which they are currently enrolled to participate in the FNSIP.
Security and medical certifications: Selected applicants must be able to receive a successful security and medical certification from the Embassy prior to beginning the program.
Compensation: Internships under FNSIP are not compensated. Any student participating in the program is not an employee of the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Department of State, or the United States Government.
How to apply: Interested applicants must submit the below listed documents to the Embassy’s Human Resources Office at Chisinauinterns@state.gov. Please indicate “FNSIP” and the position title to which you are applying in the subject line. The following documents are required:
- Statement of interest (form provided)
- Gratuitous Service Agreement (form provided)
- Official transcripts illustrating good academic standing
- Written permission from the educational institution
Next Steps: Shortlisted applicants will be contacted via email or phone and will be invited for an English language test and an interview. Language tests and interviews will be conducted in January-February 2020.

The following internship positions are available. FNSIP student applicants must state the specific position of interest in their application.
Management Intern
Major duties and projects: The Management Intern will work on a rotational schedule in several administrative offices and help improve business processes. The intern will assist with recruitment, logistics, data analysis and visualization, and create digital products for embassy leadership.
Qualification requirements: Students in the following areas of study can apply for this internship: International Relations, Foreign Languages, Business Administration, Economics, Information Science, Information Technology. The intern must have the following knowledge and skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, power point, outlook); good knowledge of computers and software related to webpage design and multi-media/graphics design; knowledge of audio-visual production techniques; strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
Level of English required: Level 3 Good working knowledge (conversations about familiar topics, complex documents).
Additional Information: The Management Section provides the administrative support that allows the embassy and the Ambassador to accomplish their goals. It includes the following subsections: Human Resources, Financial Management, Information Management, Medical Unit, General Services, Facility Maintenance, and the Community Liaison Office.
Political/Economic Intern
Major duties and projects: The Political/Economic intern will conduct political and economic research projects on various issues. He/She will work closely with staff in the Political/Economic section to support the Ambassador and implement policy objectives. The intern will identify and execute one to two research projects on topics of interest to the intern and the section, and report on the findings. He/She may draft the daily breaking political and economic news reports, serve as notetaker for a variety of meetings conducted by the Political/Economic Section, and draft reports following those meetings.
Qualification requirements: Students in the following areas of study can apply for this internship: International Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Business Administration, Law, Journalism, and Foreign Languages. The intern must have the following knowledge and skills: knowledge of Moldova’s political, economic, and social structure, institutions, political parties, and key political figures; ability to execute research projects and to prepare precise and accurate factual and analytical reports; strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, power point, outlook).
Level of English required: Level 4 Fluent (infer nuanced meaning from complex documents).
Additional Information: The Political/Economic Office (POL/ECON) analyzes political, social, and economic developments within the host country and the region. Meets with foreign government officials and representatives of political parties and non-governmental organizations to promote U.S. interests and make recommendations on U.S. foreign policy.
Public Affairs Intern
Major duties and projects: The Public Affairs intern will help enhance the Embassy’s physical and digital presence through developing program ideas for engagement at the five American Corners as well as universities and high schools. The intern will also be involved in developing content for the Embassy’s Facebook page. There will be opportunities for the intern to draft written material, including talking points and press releases on issues of bilateral and national interest. The intern will also assist in preparing for various events, such as setting up alumni gatherings and events for both U.S. and Moldovan alumni of U.S. government programs.
Qualification requirements: Students in the following areas of study can apply for this internship: Journalism and Communication Science, Social Sciences, International Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, Foreign Languages. The intern must have the following knowledge and skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, power point, outlook). Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
Level of English required: Level 4 Fluent (infer nuanced meaning from complex documents).
Additional Information: The Public Affairs Section carries out public diplomacy activities, administers cultural and educational exchange programs, manages American Resource Centers, and serves as the official contact with the media.
Office of Defense Cooperation Intern
Major duties and projects: The United States Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC), located in the Moldovan Ministry of Defense, executes ten Security Assistance and Cooperation programs with five separate Moldovan government agencies. Each program is well-managed, and the Foreign National Student Intern, as ODC Assistance Coordinator, will develop a single mechanism to track each program’s objectives and prevent conflicts between programs. Additionally, the intern would travel with the ODC Chief to official meetings, ceremonial events and will visit military bases to learn more about the security and defense sector.
Qualification requirements: Students in all areas of study can apply for this internship. The intern must have the following knowledge and skills: good knowledge of regional political and security matters; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, power point, outlook).
