Flying Engineer – Roster Position within the Ukraine Country Programme

Contract Length: short-term/long-term
Country Programme: Ukraine
Starting date: ASAP

People in Need is a Czech-based international non-governmental organization (NGO) providing humanitarian and development assistance in more than 20 countries since 1992. Today, PIN is one of the largest organizations of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, supporting vulnerable communities across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. PIN empowers civil society, advocates for human rights, and promotes social inclusion both domestically and internationally.
About the Ukrainian Programme of People in Need
PIN began operations in Ukraine in 2003 with human rights programmes and expanded its humanitarian assistance in 2014 following the escalation of conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Since officially registering in Ukraine in 2014, PIN has significantly expanded its operations, including work in hard-to-reach and frontline communities.
PIN’s assistance focuses on addressing the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable populations related to water access, district heating and energy, shelter, protection, and livelihoods. Following the full-scale invasion in February 2022, PIN has provided multi-sectoral assistance to war-affected individuals, including internally displaced persons and refugees in neighbouring countries such as Moldova. Throughout its operations in Ukraine, PIN has provided assistance to more than 5 million people.
Today, PIN operates across 9 oblasts in Ukraine, with more than 310 local and international staff working in Ivano-Frankivska, Lvivska, Kyivska (Head Office), Sumska, Kharkivska, Dnipropetrovska, Mykolaivska, Khersonska, Zaporizka, and Donetska oblasts. Security situation in Ukraine
Humanitarian workers continue to operate throughout Ukraine, although the front-line areas are being shelled almost constantly, and main cities are being targeted with missiles and UAVs quite regularly. PIN security SOPs require PIN staff to proceed to shelter should the risk level be assessed by the Security Department as the highest (launch of missiles or drones) and remain there until the air raid siren is cancelled, which cumulatively can be as often as every day, occasionally for several hours at a time (although shorter periods are as well occurring). Even though air strikes target military, energy and water infrastructure, it is often that the strikes are highly inaccurate and hit civilian infrastructure en masse. Strikes aren’t exclusive to the frontline areas and cover to different extent all the regions of Ukraine. Ukrainian air defence capabilities are severely depleted by lack of missiles provided by western allies, hence a significant number of missiles and drones reach their targets. Outside of the areas in the vicinity to the contact line, services such as medical care, shops, public transportation as well as restaurants or leisure facilities remain operational.
