The European Union Information Center in Transnistria has suspended its activities shorter than three months after work start, the regional media reported.

The non-governmental organization "Common House", on whose basis the Center worked, confirmed without commenting the situation that the Center activity was suspended for an indefinite time.

They just explained that project activity is suspended on their own initiative and underlined that the organization feels no threat or pressure from the authorities in relation to the projects realization.

As already reported by Infotag, the European center was opened in Tiraspol in early December 2013 to provide citizens with easy and free access to information about the European Union.

Wicher Slagter, Head of the Political and Economic Section of the EU Delegation to Moldova said that Transnistria should receive the information about EU at first hand. "The European Union is one of your export markets, many young people from the region would like to study there. Thus Transnistria can benefit from the association agreement with the EU, which was recently initialed by Moldova", mentioned Slagter.

According to him, if Transnistria joins the Republic of Moldova-EU free trade zone, its GDP could grow to 4%. If not, after 2015, the region will face import duties and will lose 5% of GDP.

Infotag's dossier: Since 2007 around 10 EU centers were opened in the Republic of Moldova, including those in Chisinau, Balti, Cahul, Soroca and Ungheni.
