Automobile Club of Moldova launched the ‘Sober and Safe Villages’ project in Moldova

The ‘Sober and Safe villages in Moldova’ is a new project launched by the Automobile Club of Moldova and the National Patrolling Police on the occasion of marking the 6th year of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. It addresses one of the road risk factor - drink driving, as one of the main causes of serious crashes in Moldova, especially in rural areas.

The project is funded by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile and FIA Foundationand will extend the area of risk factor pilot interventions initiated in the previous project supported by the FIA and GRSP/TRACECA in 2015. This will enable to carry on the work on raise awareness and level of civil society engagement in 3 rural regions (in North, South and Center of Moldova) selected as the most risky, according to the analysis of road accidents rate and registered cases of drink driving.

In Moldova people's awareness of safety traffic behaviour is very insufficient, particularly in rural areas drink driving is a family, community, country issue resulting in deaths and traumas and other dangerous behaviour as speeding. According to the survey results (conducted prior to the project) the most risky and vulnerable groups for drink driving in Moldova are: young and novice drivers of 1-5 and 6-10 driving experience; 18-30/35-49/50-61 years old drivers; the drivers in rural areas.

Thus, within the ‘Sober and safe villages’ will be conducted awareness campaigns on the risk of drink driving and promoting the safe behaviour among targeted groups of drivers. The main activities will take place during the Summer 2016 and will be a part of ‘The Safer&Sober Village’ Contest between the involved regions. The results will be analyzed and presented in the late Autumn 2016.
