Background:

The purpose of the post is to provide translation and interpretation services (Russian – English), assist in preparing analysis of political-economic developments in the Transdniestrian region, as well as gather and distribute internally information to the interest of the Mission. The goals and objectives of the post are monitoring media, translating and distributing edited news, and preparing informative reports on developments in Transdniestria.


Tasks and Responsibilities:

The work of the Senior Interpreter/Political Assistant is supervised by the National Programme Officer (NP1), as the first level supervisor, and the Deputy Head of Mission, as the second level supervisor. The direct supervisor provides advice and guidance on general strategic priorities of the Mission’s Tiraspol office, which is part of the Office of the Head of Mission Programme. On routine basis, much of the work is carried out independently. For the translation and interpretation work generally applicable guidelines are available. For the political support work of the incumbent, the supervisor defines the general objectives, which are discussed and agreed with the DHoM, the Political Officers and the Mission’s Spokesperson. The incumbent is expected to reach for assistance whenever necessary. 

  1.    Interpretation/Translation
    Provides English-Russian and Russian-English translation/interpretation services for the Mission’s leadership, for the Mission as a whole, and for visiting delegations; Prepares and translates correspondence, documents, publications and other material;
  2.  Informative support
    Provides informative support in drafting analysis of political, political-economic and media issues related to the Transdniestrian settlement process and internal developments in the Transdeniestrian region for the Mission’s leadership, the Political officers, the Mission’s Spokesperson and other MMs; monitors the Transdniestrian media and investigates into those political issues;
  3. Media monitoring
    Compiles, translates and distributes news from international, Transdniestrian and Russian news agencies, Transdniestrian broadcast media on events relevant to the activity of the Mission; translates urgent and important news items for special attention; gathers opensource information of interest to the Mission;
  4.  Logistical support
    Assists National Programme Officer and other Mission Members in organizing of events, negotiation meetings, official visits, as well as other activities in the Mission’s office in Tiraspol; drafts memos on results of such events; Maintaining a library of all relevant documents; Assisting Mission’s other Programmes in case of necessity.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Education:
    Completed secondary education supplemented by formal studies in modern languages, as well as specialized training for translation/interpretation;
  • Experience and knowledge/skills:
    A minimum of 6 years of working experience as an interpreter/translator including some experience in political analysis and office administration preferably in an international organization or embassy;                               Computer literate with practical knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Languages:
    Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Russian languages.
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities;
  • Ability and willingness to work as a member of team, with people of different cultural, and religious backgrounds, different gender, and diverse political views, while maintaining impartiality and objectivity.

Remuneration Package:

Monthly remuneration, subject to social security deduction is EUR 935.00, OSCE salaries are exempt from taxation in Moldova. Social benefits include participation in the Cigna medical insurance scheme and the OSCE Provident Fund.

The mandatory retirement age at the OSCE is 65 years for contracted positions at the general service, professional and director level. The Organization shall apply an age limit of 63 years at the time of appointment as the incumbent selected is normally expected to carry out the contractual obligation of two years.
