Context/Background:
In April 2018, the implementation of EU/Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) funded Project: “Increasing the competitiveness of the agri-food sector through integration to domestic and global value chains in particular in the soya sector” started. The three years (April 2018- April 2021) project is implemented by Donau Soja - together with its consortium partner the Moldovan NGO Pro Didactica and aims to improve existing quality standards and to strengthen capacities in vocational education and training in agriculture.
One of the main objectives of the project is to increase access to markets and expand the demand for certified and organic agri-food products on national and foreign markets and to cope with the market demands all involved value chain participants’ first need to be strengthened and then continuously supported. Regarding domestic utilization, opportunities exist in building integrated value chains for feed and livestock producers.
The project activity in the development of local value chain of certified soybean has revealed that the capacity of local processing units to ensure the acceptable quality of the raw beans acquired from the local producers is very scarce. There is a stringent need to ensure that the raw materials used is of a quality good enough to result in soya cake of the quality and parameters needed and accepted by the local poultry and pork farms, who represent the largest share of the local soya cake consumption and has been ascending over the last years.
Local processors need to be supported to face the increasing demand for soya cake and the constantly raising standards for such products set by the consumers, therefore, Donau Soja Moldova intends to assist 5 actors of the soya value chain, by supplying them with basic technology enabling rapid GMO and mycotoxin detection.
