Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

The conflict in Ukraine has led to the overspill of over 450,000 forcibly displaced persons to Moldova. As migratory flows continue unabated, IOM is urgently and significantly boosting its capacity in Moldova to provide multi-sectoral assistance to respond to urgent emerging humanitarian needs in a dynamic context.

Under the overall supervision of the Protection Coordinator and under the direct supervision of the Protection team leader, the successful candidate will be supporting project operations through facilitating communication with migrants in the assigned site(s).

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide effective communication to migrants during individual/ group sessions, activities, assistance provision in cooperation with IOM staff, UN agencies, local authorities and NGOs.
  2. Provide direct bilateral and multilateral interpretation services in physical (BCP, office, airport, assembly points) or virtual settings.
  3. Direct migrants and refugees to available assistance at BCPs, including available transportation, medical and protection assistance.
  4. Identify vulnerable migrants and refugees in need of specialized assistance.
  5. Act as a cultural mediator to provide information to the representatives of host country institutions to better comprehend the perceptions of migrants.
  6. Liaise with Moldovan Border authorities on behalf of newly arrived migrants.
  7. Support in translating information materials/ documents and other needed information used for individual and/ or group activities in the migrant communities.
  8. Assist in secondary, related tasks, such as informing the applicant(s) for the schedule of programs and assist them with their needs.
  9. Perform other related duties that may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree with two years of relevant professional experience; Or,
  • High School diploma with four years of relevant experience.

Experience

  • Knowledge of word processing and typing skills in the required languages.
  • Proven ability to work with spread sheets and database applications will be considered advantageous.
  • 1 year of interpretation experience in migrant and refugee counselling.

Required Languages:

  • Azeri/English and – Azeri/Romanian or Azeri/Russian.

A prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station and work permit, as applicable.
