Duties

The incumbent manages all aspects of Immigrant Visa (IV) and Nonimmigrant (NIV) processing, prepares applications for officers to conduct interviews and flags all suspect documents, communicates with the public on visa-related issues and answers correspondence and phone inquiries, provides Romanian-Russian-English translations during interviews and performs a variety of other tasks such as serving as back-up to other consular LE Staff as needed. Is primarily responsible for management of the Diversity Visa Lottery Program. Uses the IV automated system, requests appropriate visa numbers (and returns unused numbers), and ensures proper application of quota control system, chargeability and preference status.  Assists in updating the NIV appointment schedule.  Collects documents of applicants and organizes/screens them for officer adjudication, which includes data entry into the computerized consular systems, screening the applications for fraud, organizing documents, capturing image and finger scans, visa printing, and finally, returning documents to the applicant.  Serves as primary Consular Section cashier and monitors cash for signs of counterfeit U.S. or local currency.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:  Position requires a minimum of two years of experience in the area of visa work, administrative, customer service, office management and/or the application of regulatory material.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:  The jobholder is required to have a detailed knowledge of the work procedures and guidelines of the Section work. The jobholder is expected to have an in-depth understanding of host country policies related to immigration, the demand for visa services by local customers and clients and the immigration environment of the host country.

Education Requirements:

  • Secondary school is required.


Evaluations:

LANGUAGE: Level IV (fluency)) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required. Level IV (fluency) speaking/reading/writing Romanian is required. Level IV (fluency) speaking/reading/writing Russian is required.  (This may be tested.)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

    1. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and have good data entry/keyboard skills.
    2.  Must have the ability to learn State Department specific software. Attention to detail is essential.
    3. Must have good customer service skills and must possess strong inter-personal communication skills, including the ability to handle difficult clients with professionalism
